The Role of Candies

Candy plays an important role in Pokerogue in the following ways. To use candy, you need to be on the Starter Select screen and make sure you have unlocked the Pokémon you want to use candy on. Then, select that Pokémon and go to the “Use Candies” option.

1. Unlock passive abilities for pokémon.

By consuming candies, you can unlock additional passive abilities for your initial Pokémon. In addition to the Pokémon’s regular skills, you can choose to turn passive abilities on or off. When a passive skill is unlocked, it will take effect on a new turn and can boost the Pokémon’s combat power. If the initial Pokémon is in baby form, only babies can unlock passive skills.

2. Permanently reduce the starter cost of Pokémon.

pokedex starter costEach initial Pokémon has a starter cost that ranges from 1 to 10. The number at the top left of each Pokémon on the Initial Pokémon Selection screen represents the Starter Cost. You can consume candy to permanently reduce this cost up to two times. This gives you more flexibility in choosing your team. For example, Cyndaquil has an starter cost of 3, using Candy can reduce the starter cost from 3 to 2 and then to 1. And Rattata has an starter cost of 1, using Candy can reduce the starter cost from 1 to 0.5 and then to 0.25.

3. Boosting affinity.

Capturing, hatching, and battling will provide Pokémon with candies that can be used to boost their affinity. A high enough affinity can allow certain Pokémon to evolve and boost the power of certain moves.

Currently, in PokéRogue, players can increase the affinity of their Pokémon in two ways: by battling and by using rare candies. However, when a Pokémon faints, the affinity decreases. Battles mentioned here include:

  • Participating in a successful battle (even if a Pokémon is replaced in the middle of a battle, as long as the opposing Pokémon is defeated or captured, that Pokémon will still receive an affinity bonus)
  • Defeating another Pokémon
  • Capture a wild Pokémon

When using Rare Candy, Pokémon will gain a certain amount of affinity. The Candy Jar only increases the level of the Pokémon, not the affinity.

Rare Candy increases the Affinity of all Pokémon in the entire party, with the same effect as standard Rare Candy.

If a Pokémon is revived by holding a Resurrection Seed, the affinity will not decrease since it has not actually fainted.

Affinity Event Affinity Gained or Lost
Battling +2
Rare Candy +5
Fainting -10

4. Purchase specific pokémon eggs.

Using Candy, you can purchase Species Specific Eggs, ensuring the purchase of a specific Pokémon of your choice. These eggs have increased odds on IV, a higher chance of shining, hidden ability, and egg move unlocks.

The only exception to this is Phione. If you buy a Phione egg, you’ll actually get a regular Manaphy egg, but there’s a 1/8 chance that a Phione will hatch.

PS: Hatching the egg is needed to unlock passive skills, not the candy itself. To purchase an egg, you need to unlock the passive skill of the Pokémon on the initial Pokémon selection screen first. After unlocking the passive skill, you can use the candy to hatch the egg (which always contains the Pokémon you purchased).

Hatched Pokémon will have the following increased chances:

  1. Shining rate: 1/24
  2. Hidden ability rate: 1/8
  3. Rare eggs will have an increased movement rate based on the Pokémon’s egg level.
  • Common Eggs: 1/24
  • Rare Eggs: 1/12
  • Epic Eggs: 1/6
  • Legendary Eggs: 1/3

5. Candies are an important source of props in endless mode.

In Endless Mode, candies are an important source of obtaining permanent props. For example, the Gas Cloak and Resurrection Seeds, these props can effectively increase the tolerance level and help you better deal with the challenges at the higher levels.

The Main Way to Get Candy

In PokeRogue, candies are mainly obtained through capturing, hatching, battling, increasing affinity, and challenges at specific locations. By utilizing these methods wisely and choosing the right Pokemon for the challenge, you can increase the efficiency and success rate of getting candies.

1. Capture and hatch to get candies.

By catching and hatching, Pokémon can get candies.

Event Candy Received
Caught +1
Hatched +2
  • Capture Boss Pokémon, you can receive 2 candies.
  • Capture/hatch a Common Shiny Pokémon, you can receive 5 candies.
  • Capture/hatch a Variant Rare Shiny Pokémon, you can receive 10 Candies.
  • Capture/hatch a Variant Epic Shiny Pokémon, you can receive 20 candies.

2. Increase Pokémon affinity.

Candy Friendship is a mechanism for earning candy by increasing a Pokémon’s affinity. The progress of obtaining candy can be viewed on the Pokémon’s information screen. Hovering the mouse cursor over the Candy icon will display the current amount of Accumulated Affinity Points, as well as the total amount of points needed to obtain Candy. ( empty friendship candy Empty candy; full friendship candies Almost full candy )

Whenever a Pokémon gains or loses Affinity Points, its Candy Friendship Points will also increase or decrease in tandem (in Classic and Challenge modes, the number of points gained doubles). Candy Friendship Points will continue to accumulate and will be awarded to the Pokémon when the specified threshold is reached. At this point, that Pokémon’s Candy Friendship Points will reset to zero. This process will repeat indefinitely.

Candy Friendship Points accumulate and are shared among all runs that use that Pokémon.

Even if you lose Candy Friendship Points, you will not lose the Candy you have already earned. When progress reaches 0, Friendship Points will no longer decrease.

If a Pokémon earns more Candy Friendship Points than the threshold, when reset, the excess points will not be carried over to the next iteration of the process.
